Looking for something to take with you on the road, or a snack to munch at your desk? Forget about those awful Powerbars and other various soy bars. Granola bars are OK, but they do not have much protein. High quality protein bars are available at the store, but for $5 a pop! We are looking for something cheap and easy, and here it is. Do-it-yourself, homemade protein bars.
Homemade Protein Bars: The Recipe
3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 1/2 cups dried milk
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 cup lite syrup
2 scoops protein powder
2 large egg whites or 1 egg
1 1/4 cup orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup raisins or dried fruit
Start by preheating the oven to 325 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper, or spray on some non-stick butter flavored Pam spray. In a large metal bowl, mix all the ingredients until the oats are well coated. Spread the mix onto the cookie sheet and press down to make 10 cutting lines so you can separate them into 10 protein bars later. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. While still warm, cut them apart and allow to cool before wrapping. The bars can be stored airtight at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
Optional Upgrades
Nutty Bars - use 1 cup chopped nuts instead of dried fruit or raisins.
Fruity Bars - experiment with various extracts other than vanilla to change up the flavor.
The Protein Bar Diet - make a whole bunch of these bars with various fruits and nuts, and various flavors of protein powder. Eat the bars for 3 out of 5 meals each day and make the other two meals small. Do this for a month and see if you don’t drop a couple pounds.
Who likes peanut butter?
Who likes brownies?
If you are anything like me or the rest of the bodybuilding / powerlifting / weightlifting world, you answered ‘ME ME ME!’ to both questions. If so, this recipe is for you. I could not post an easier recipe and prepping a meal can’t be quicker unless you are unwrapping a protein bar. That said, on with the recipe!
Peanut Butter Protein Brownies : The Recipe
1 scoop of protein powder; chocolate, vanilla, or peanut butter
1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
milk or water
Mix all ingredients together in a small glass bowl; do not use plastic. If the resulting mixture is too thick add a couple drops of milk or water to loosen it up until it reaches your desired consistency. Since it is already in a glass bowl, microwave on high for 30-45 seconds. Mixture should come out to a cake/brownie like consistency.
Many friends of mine have doubted this recipe, thinking the peanut butter protein brownies would be mediocre at best. Instead what they find is a protein party in their mouths. Give this one a try for a quick high protein, high ‘healthy-fats’ snack.
Today’s Lesson About Plastics
The reason I make a big deal about the use of a glass bowl, is because you do not want to be cooking anything in microwave safe plastic containers. Plastic containers contain trace amounts of phytoestrogens, which seep into food when it is stored or cooked inside such containers. A lifetime of these estrogens can have a negative impact on testosterone levels and they tend to promote cancer in laboratory animals. It might not kill you, but your best bet in today’s toxic society is to avoid anything that could possibly be related to cancer. Every little bit helps.

The Miracle Fruit Plant (Synsepalum dulcificum) is a plant first documented in 1725 during an excursion to its native West Africa. Local tribes picked the berry from shrubs and chewed it before meals. Miracle Fruit Berries contain a harmless active glycoprotein which temporarily gently binds to the tongue’s taste buds, causing bitter and sour foods, such as lemons and rhubarb, consumed after eating miracle fruit, to taste sweet. It is extremely simple to use: just chew the fruit or dissolve one “tablet” on your tongue and the effect will last from 10 minutes to 2 hours, depending mostly on what you eat. When the effect wears off, everything tastes as before (lemons are sour again).
Miracle Fruit is safe and has no known side effects (well, lemons taste sweet!). It has been used for centuries (in Africa) and for decades in the US and Asia. Miracle Fruit is available as fresh fruits or freeze dried extract which can be stored for a much longer period of time. Miracle Fruit berries can be chewed before eating sour fruit (grapefruit, rhubarb, lemons, strawberries and similar) or used in combination with special recipes to make sugar free desserts. The desserts can be made without sugar and artificial sweeteners, pure freshly squeezed natural fruit juices are more than enough to make any dessert extremely sweet. Besides desserts, Miracle Fruit can also be used to prepare sugar free cocktails, 100% natural lemonades and other delicious drinks. Innovative chefs like Ian Kleinman of Westin, Colorado, are using Miracle Fruit powder and tablets to make innovative foods like Miracle Fruit gum and miracle fruit popsicles.
Miracle Fruit first caught attention of party goers. Numerous Miracle Fruit parties have been organized worldwide, some of which received wide media coverage in newspapers like New York Times and The Guardian. Foods served at a typical Miracle Fruit Party include all sorts of citrus fruits, dark chocolate, wine, beer, cocktails, and essential fresh strawberries, kiwi and rhubarb. Miracle Fruit can also improve the taste after chemotherapy. Results are inconclusive but it seems to work in around 50% of all cases. It also has endless possibilities as a sugar substitute for diabetes patients. They can finally enjoy in desserts without sugar and controversial artificial sweeteners, some of which have been rumored to cause health problems.
In Japan, Miracle Fruit tablets have been on sale since 2006. Miracle Fruit Café’s, serving sugar free desserts and Miracle Fruit berries have become very popular in Japan in the past two years. Tablets are of medicinal quality and produced in a pharmaceutical clean room. They contain no artificial additives (such as colorants or preservatives).
Miracle Fruit is also known as Synsepalum dulcificum, Frutto dei miracoli, Fruta maravillosa, Fruto milagro, Fruta de milagro, Frutamilagrosa, Sideroxylon dulcificum, Mirakelfrukten, Mirakelfrukt, Mirakelbær, Mirakelbaer, Wunderbeere, Mirakelbes and Le Fruit Miraculeux.

The egg salad recipe is one of the very easy recipes that one can try. After a tiring day at work, you look for easy recipes so you can whip up a meal nice and easy and quick. Egg salad is very flexible and serves as a side dish at any time no matter whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can even use it to make sandwiches. Besides it uses ingredients that you will almost always already have in your kitchen. All you need is some diced hard boiled eggs, some chopped celery and some mayonnaise which you mix together.
Another of the easy recipes I have come across is the fruit and nut salad recipe. Cut two bananas and two oranges into slices and mix them together with juice of half a lemon, some walnuts and French dressing. You can dish this on lettuce leaves if you like.
Another hot favorite in our home is the seven layer salad recipe which again comes under the category of easy recipes. It is great for barbeques and potluck dinners. The best thing about this dish is that everyone has their own variation. You never really know what it is going to be made of until you serve yourself.
If you’d like to try out this salad recipe place some lettuce leaves at the bottom of the bowl for the first layer followed by green peas for the second. Next comes a layer of onion chopped fine followed by diced hard boiled eggs and some grated Cheddar cheese. Then some diced tomatoes and finally some mayonnaise for the top layer. Refrigerate and toss it before serving. Now won’t this be one of your easy recipes? You can replace some layers with mushrooms, ham, bacon, boiled prawns or ***** peas; the choice is yours, let your imagine run wild.
If you are looking for a mixed fruit salad recipe, you can use grapefruit, bananas, oranges, pineapple and apples. In case any of these fruits are unavailable, you can use canned ones or simply replace with some other fruit that is available. The juice from the canned fruit can serve as a fruit salad dressing. You can either mix all the diced fruit with the salad dressing or just pour it on the top while serving. There are plenty of easy recipes on the Net that you can choose from for fruit salads.
If you are looking for more easy recipes, the Russian fruit salad recipe tells you to peel, pit and slice peaches and pineapples and add them to some raspberries, strawberries and apricots. Put together a pound of sugar, a cup of water, juice from two oranges and two lemons, a half teaspoon of cinnamon powder, some grated lemon rind, a cup of rum and a cup of red wine and boil it for some five minutes. Pour it over the fruit mixture and serve cold. You can keep it on ice so that it chills faster.

In this day and age, everybody wants to improve their looks with a thinner waist line. For that, people may need some directions for finding healthy solutions to lose weight. The best choice someone can make in order to lose weight and gain health, energy and vitality is switching to a raw food diet.
People discover each day the benefits of raw food recipes. When switching to a raw food diet you will see improvements to your daily behavior like improved sleep, some anti-aging benefits, increased vitality and health. Owing to such advantages, the popularity of raw food diets is bound to increase, because we all want to improve the way we look and the way we feel about ourselves, don’t we?
In the beginning people didn’t cook their food and they consumed it raw. Eating like this helped them keep very healthy. Our bodies are built so that we can consume raw foods. The only thing we need to do is to rediscover the way we were in the beginning and enjoy all that nature has to give us. Consuming raw foods helps our bodies because they contain enzymes that help digestion. These enzymes are destroyed if the fruits and vegetables are cooked. Our body digests the foods through its own enzymes, but the enzymes in our body also give us energy. Therefore, when we use the enzymes in our bodies for digestion and not the ones in fruits and vegetables, it means that our energy levels and vitality are decreased.
Basic guidelines for planning your healthy raw food recipes recommend that you should include in your diet mostly fruit and vegetables, which are our most biologically conducive meals. Something that can help you in planning your raw food recipes is the categories in which fruits and vegetables are divided.
Fruits can be divided in sweet fruits (tropical fruits, persimmons, sweet grapes), acid fruits (lemons, citrus), sub-acid fruits (apples, pears, tart grapes) and fatty fruits (avocadoes, durian). Melons constitute a separate category of fruits. Some of the vegetable categories are non-starchy greens (spinach, cabbage), fruit vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes) and root vegetables (carrots, celeriac). Another category of vegetables includes lettuce and celery. The vegetables named here can be found as items on a list of raw low carbohydrate foods. All these fruits and vegetables are the common components of raw food recipes.
Now that the categories have been established, here are some rules of combining them in order for you to avoid fermentation in the intestines, indigestion, water retention and toxicity. Sweet fruits are to be eaten with other varieties of sweet fruits only or with sub-acid fruits. Don’t eat acid fruit with anything other than celery and lettuce. Avocadoes and olives should be eaten with non-starchy vegetables. Melons should be eaten alone or not eaten at all. These are combinations that you should try. But there are a few combinations that you should try to avoid like starch and acid (tomato and potato), protein and protein (avocadoes and nuts), sweets and starch (maple syrup and rice). Think about these combinations when you are developing your own raw food recipes.
Raw food diets are not all about fruits and vegetables. Organic foods can also be included in the diet. Organic cheese is very nutritious and can be included in raw food diets because it does not involve a cooking process that destroys enzymes. You should make sure that the organic cheese you buy is organic, and not a scam. The process that is followed by farmers to obtain organic cheese consists of letting nature take its natural course, from harvesting the milk from the cows and letting it coagulate with no help from additional catalytic agents. Incredible products made from raw ingredients and that may include organic cheese can be found here, on rawbakery.com.

Death By Chocolate, Chocolate Truffle Loaf with Berry Coulis is easy to make but will elicit comments like, “Are you trying to kill me or what?” I’ll share this favorite recipe with you only if you promise not to yell at me.
Some die by the sword, some of a broken heart. The French call the moment of supreme pleasure “le petit mort” — the little death.
I prefer my death in stages, served up in a nice portion of artery-clogging cocoa-flavored fat, garnished with even more butterfat, sugar, and fruit. This is the kind of dessert you eat the day before you decide to go on an abstemious diet.
Be warned. If you make this dessert, people will eat it, but they’ll abuse you first. I’ve given up on bringing it to parties. Each time I do, I get grief.
“Carol, you made THAT? Why’d you go and do that for?”
“No one’s forcing you to eat it,” I reply.
“Whadaya, crazy? Of course I’m eating it. Curse you,” they add, while inhaling the stuff.
This is a variation on an old recipe given me by my friend Erika. I have no idea of its origin. Concoct at your own risk:
DEATH BY CHOCOLATE
2 cups heavy cream
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1 8 oz. package semi-sweet baking chocolate
1 8 oz. package unsweetened chocolate
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup margarine (or butter, if you’re a glutton for punishment)
1/4 cup confectioner’s suger
1 tspn. vanilla
Cocoa powder to garnish
BERRY COULIS
1 10-oz. package frozen fruit (I prefer raspberries; cherries and strawberries work well too)
1/3 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup of your favorite hootch (optional but it’s considered a criminal offense in 40 states and most countries to leave it out)
For the Death:
Line a loaf pan with plastic wrap; sprinkle some cocoa powder in the bottom, and set aside.
In a mixing bowl, blend 1/2 cup cream with the egg yolks.
Stir chocolate, corn syrup, and margerine over medium heat in a 3-quart saucepan until melted. Add egg and cream mixture. Stirring constantly, cook 3 minutes. Cool to room temperature.
Warning: don’t let this mixture get too hot or the eggs cook, and you get something resembling chocolate scrambled eggs — not a bad thing, but not what you want.
Now: beat remaining cream, sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. Fold into the cooled-down chocolate glop until no streaks remain. Pour into the loaf pan. Chill. I mean it, chill; it’s not done yet, so calm down. Lick the spoon for now. As for the dessert, it must stay in the fridge overnight or in the freezer for 3 hours to harden. Upturn, remove plastic wrap, sprinkle with more cocoa powder. Serve in 1/2-inch thick slices with Berry Coulis and (optional) unsweetened whipped cream on the side. Serves 12, if you’re sharing.
Preparing the Berry Coulis:
Thaw fruit. In a blender, puree 1/2 the fruit and strain if desired. Over very low flame, add corn syrup, remaining fruit, and booze (I’ve used plain brandy, Grand Marnier, wine; up to you) until flavors nicely meld. Spoon a little coulis onto dessert plates before putting Death slice on top, then drizzle more on top, warm or cold.
